Carlissa's Story
I have been part of the Emerald Academy family for almost 6 years. I have loved every moment of my time, and it has become a second home to me.
In college, I studied sociology and urban multicultural education. I knew then I wanted to make a greater impact on students and their education. I was intrigued by the rigorous curriculum, mission and expectations that Emerald Academy had to offer. I also loved that the school culture seemed more of a family than some of the larger schools at which I attended and interned.
Since working at Emerald Academy all of these things hold true. We continue to hold high expectations and engage scholars through rigorous, daily instruction. I truly believe we have the smartest scholars in Knoxville and can't wait to see them succeed later in life.
Our school culture is one of a kind.
Teachers in every grade become familiar with students throughout the building. This creates a support system for scholars that can't compare. When scholars are struggling, they're able to reach out to teachers who provide extra support, even on an emotional level.
Another layer of our culture I have the privilege of observing is when younger scholars learn to look up to the upper school scholars, who volunteer parts of their day to read and work with the younger scholars on academics.
I also love working here because of how encouraged I am by the wealth of knowledge our teachers hold, and the culture of feedback we've developed. We strive to use everyone's expertise to help build one another up. Teachers have a support system for one another that ultimately provides scholars with the highest quality of instruction.
I am encouraged by the outstanding growth our school has made, particularly in the 2019-2020 school year. I foresee lawyers, doctors, presidents, teachers, and more coming from the alumni of Emerald Academy.
I believe strongly in the mission of the school, "To prepare urban scholars for the college of their choice and community leadership."
The 2021-2022 school year is already off to a great start as we launched our summer Lab School, and I know we will continue to make the academic achievement and growth that will set our scholars up for success in higher education.
